Bob’s Best Of: Royce Da 5′ 9″

One of my favorite rappers and an artist that seams to only be progressing with his delivery, content and just over-all presence on a track as time goes on. Royce has been through quite a few ups & Downs in his career, mostly due to his on and off freindships and collaborations with Shady/ Aftermath Artist’s. He was a ghost writer for Dr. Dre ( I guess back when it was less known that Dre doesn’t write most of his verses) on the Chronic 2001 and, IMHO, influenced Eminem’s original battle delivery style a great deal. Even though; ”Dre recognizes that he isn’t a lyricist,” (says Chuck Creekmur co-founder of AllHipHop.com in an interview for Gelf Magazine) In 1998, Dr. Dre and Eminem severed their ties with Royce da 5’9” after his manager revealed that he had ghostwritten a few of Dre’s songs for 2001. Specifically the song entitled “The Message” on which Dre talks about very prsonal subjects like the death of his brother. I guess that doesn’t look so good to the ‘keep it real’ generation or I guess any generation for that matter. Through all his battles he’s managed to put out three full releases and two mixtapes and guest appeared on too many tracks to count. As of late, this man seams to be honing in on his skills to no end and I suggest you watch out for him. They basically tried to blacklist him once and he’s slowly been working his way back up with a lot of success. Will mainstream consumers catch on? I hope so cause he’s already won over any real rap fan by now. I particularly dig his collabs with Primo, (many of which I put on this mix). My vote for most interesting and inspiring verses on any Rap realease in 08′ goes to Royce….

I can’t speak highly enough about this incredibly talented artist that I have a lot of admiration for; Micah James. In my opinion, Mr James is the essence of a Rappers Rapper. An all around GREAT emcee who definitely deserves to be doing this for a living. I’ve had the Honor of Recording and performing with Micah for a couple years now and he never ceases to amaze me. Below I’ve posted a link for his first official mixtape, demo or whatever you wanna call it, as he says. I’ve barely had a chance to digest the whole thing (and I’ve listened to it quite a few times now) as it’s an ample serving of some serious audio nutrition. I’m featured on two of these tracks; with Free Speech on “Dream” and over a Ludacris beat on “Drink One More”. Some great original production on here from Ro Blvd. & Bombay and some classically fresh instrumental choices including some really unpredictable joints like The Cure‘s ”All Cats are Grey” and the Aphex Twins’ “Bbydhyonchord” . I know you’re gonna dig this if you give it a good listen, whoever you are. In an email he sent me with this link he very humbly stated; “ I listened to it from start to finish and I gotta say, I’m not ashamed of it. I’ll let you be the judge, though.” and my response to him and all of you is that this collection of music is emphatically fresh and needs to be owned by anyone who likes music at all.

The buzz for this mixtape and U-N-I’s full Album: The Love Supreme, Produced in its entirety by my good friend and favorite producer; Ro Blvd Has been growing out of control and the mixtape portion has finally arrived. The tape has appearances from my other friend Free Speech, Talib Kweli, Evidence, Black Milk, Tunji, Bambu, Shawn Jackson, 6th Sense, and more. A couple gems produced by Ro are on here and some fire from a producer who seams to have a lot of promise named DIBIA$E & others. My joints are “Cali Soul” and “Mainstream Consumers” but over all the whole tape is quite nice. I think hip hop fans of all kinds will enjoy it so I posted a good Megaupload link that I tested and know works.

Here’s a really fresh independent 12inch release from The Nasty One, Mr. Jones. These joints will probably end up on the lost tapes 2 if it ever drops. I know the B side was produced by Large Pro, but I’m not sure about the other two. My joint is the Rise and Fall but they’re all dope. Oh and I cant forget, AZ get’s more than busy with Nas on the Serious track fo’ real.

Bob’s Ode To Canadian Rap

In late 1996 I first heard a record from a young Canadian rapper named Kardinal Offishall and I was diggin’ dudes style (no homo). The record was “Naughty Dread” and within the next 2 or 3 years I was introduced to the rest of his Circle crew (now known as The BlackJays) through a slew of extremely dope 12” singles, LP’s and Ep’s. In a time when Hip Hop seamed to only be evolving with every release, let us not forget the great contributions we received from our friends to the North. From what I know the Circle crew consisted of Emcees and Producers: Kardinal, Solitaire, Choclair and Saukrates with extended fam Rascalz and more recently, Brassmunk. Some other great Northern Contributions came from Mathematik mostly with production from the Headnods (”Learn to Earn” , “On Top” and the “Rhyme Trainin” Remix are classics in my opinion). K-OS with his singles “Musical Essence” and one of my favorite rap joints period was his banger on Da Grassroots record Passage Through Time feat.Thrust. Although Kardinal’s new music makes me kind of queasy, he used to be dope but I’ll get in depth about that a little later. I pledge allegiance to these select few of Canadas elite Rap crafters right up until they do what Kardinal just did with his last album (WaahWaaahWaaahaaah…) Shame on you sir!
